In questo episodio le coordinate sonore daranno modo di orientarsi nel caso si sia smarrita la bussola, data l’abnorme intensità di calore che investe mente corpo e spirito in questo inizio estate infuocato. Al pop disincarnato di Miko, Naga Kirana e Emily A. Sprague, e ad un variegato numero di voci declinate al femminile, tra le quali Ava Rabiat, Marie Delprat, Alison Cotton e Helen Svoboda, si sovrappongono l’avant-jazz di Mike Cooper, Mogil e Ramon Moro e l’elettronica di matrice armena targata Margenrot o quella sperimentale, glaciale e computerizzata di Laurent Güdel e il suo ultimo disco State Music, contenente altresì un saggio critico sulle condizioni politiche che hanno reso possibile la musica elettronica. Da più lati ci si interroga sul significato, per musicisti autodidatti formatisi nelle scene DIY, di inserirsi in spazi costruiti sul principio opposto, dove infrastrutture e prestigio dipendono da Stati, università e emittenti i cui interessi sono da sempre intrecciati con le politiche culturali e il capitale.
Non così su Radio Bandito, che libera musica nella sonosfera dal 2022.

Se avrete il piacere di continuare potrete lasciarvi fluttuare nei vapori dell’ambient music con un piede nella tiepida primavera e l’altro nell’umido autunno così come propone Ai Yamamoto con l’album Seasons in uscita per Someone Good. Spazio poi alla reverie con i brani da una parte di Tomat e dall’altra di Hah Nah & Pomposo, combo che, esplorando le dualità e le tensioni latenti tra la maestosità del Vesuvio, la quiete dei villaggi costieri e le storie sepolte sotto la cenere millenaria, ci condurrà infine nelle stanze oniriche architettate da Omar Cheikh e Tokoro Wohnen.
A proposito di Tokoro Wohnen è inevitabile considerare che un disco ispirato a giganteschi cumuli di rifiuti sia altresì ricco dei residui del passato; al centro dell’album c’è l’influenza delle discariche di scisto bituminoso del West Lothian, enormi masse di materiale di scarto che raggiungono i 95 metri di altezza, vestigia della prolifica industria scozzese del petrolio di scisto durante il XIX e l’inizio del XX secolo. Col tempo la natura se ne è riappropriata, rivestendo le superfici di ghiaia rossa con sprazzi di verde e attirando la vibrante presenza di allodole, tassi e altri piccoli animali.
Futuro Ancestrale, al secolo Giuseppe Doronzo, sassofonista, compositore e polistrumentista italiano residente ad Amsterdam con il brano Scindone ci propone poi un’antica preghiera pagano-religiosa pugliese, sussurrata dai contadini al sole prima di entrare nei campi, disegnando così sulla nostra mappa il sentiero di un pendio da camminare senza fretta, sempre secondo le proprie possibilità, sciogliendo il tutto in un canto che sa di passato.

E allora, senza fretta, imbocchiamo insieme il sentiero che sale in vetta, ricalcando i passi di chi ci ha preceduto, ma le cui orme trovano spazio solo più nell’eco di un ricordo che si fa sempre più fievole e che solo la musica sa ricomporre grazie alle sue imprevedibili sensazioni e sinestesie.

In this episode, the soundscapes will help you find your bearings should you have lost your compass, given the extreme heat that is overwhelming mind, body and spirit at the start of this scorching summer. The ethereal pop of Miko, Naga Kirana and Emily A. Sprague, alongside a diverse array of female voices – including Ava Rabiat, Marie Delprat, Alison Cotton and Helen Svoboda, are layered with the avant-jazz of Mike Cooper, Mogil and Ramon Moro, the Armenian-influenced electronica of Margenrot, and the experimental, glacial, computer-generated sounds of Laurent Güdel and his latest album State Music, which also features a critical essay on the political conditions that made electronic music possible. Questions are being raised from many quarters about what it means for self-taught musicians, trained in DIY scenes, to enter spaces built on the opposite principle, where infrastructure and prestige depend on states, universities and broadcasters whose interests have always been intertwined with cultural policies and capital.
Not so on Radio Bandito, which has been releasing music into the soundscape since 2022.

If you’d like to continue, you can let yourself drift away on the waves of ambient music, with one foot in the balmy spring and the other in the damp autumn, just as Ai Yamamoto suggests with the album Seasons, due for release on Someone Good. Next, make way for reverie with tracks from Tomat on one side and Hah Nah & Pomposo on the other – a duo who, by exploring the dualities and latent tensions between the majesty of Vesuvius, the tranquillity of coastal villages and the stories buried beneath millennia-old ash, will ultimately lead us into the dreamlike spaces crafted by Omar Cheikh and Tokoro Wohnen.
Speaking of Tokoro Wohnen, it is impossible not to consider that an album inspired by gigantic mounds of rubbish is also rich in the residues of the past; at the heart of the album lies the influence of the West Lothian oil shale dumps – enormous mounds of waste material reaching heights of 95m., remnants of Scotland’s prolific oil shale industry during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Over time, nature has reclaimed the site, covering the surfaces of red gravel with splashes of green and attracting the vibrant presence of larks, badgers and other small animals.

Futuro Ancestrale, whose real name is Giuseppe Doronzo, an Italian saxophonist, composer and multi-instrumentalist based in Amsterdam, presents us with the track ‘Scindone’ – an ancient Apulian pagan-religious prayer, whispered by farmers in the sunshine before heading out into the fields – thus tracing on our map the path of a slope to be walked without haste, always at one’s own pace, blending it all into a song that evokes the past.

And so, with no rush, let us set off together along the path that climbs to the summit, following in the footsteps of those who went before us, yet whose traces now exist only in the echo of a memory that grows ever fainter – a memory that only music can piece back together, thanks to its unpredictable sensations and synaesthesia.
